Destination: Nudist Beach Zipolite

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

All you need to know about getting to and from Zipolite, as well as some budgetary info.

This place is legit all about the nudity.

Nestled amongst rocks in Oaxaca is Zipolite, famously known as the only nude beach in Mexico. The swell, per usual in Oaxaca, comes in big and hard. 30 miles from Huatulco and 45 miles from Puerto Escondido, Zipolite is another small town Oaxacan gem.

Attractions

The main attraction of Zipolite is definitely nakedness. There is a “Naked Zipolite” hotel, a “Nude Hotel,” and a full-fledged nudist colony in Zipolite. But there is a decent bar scene, a nice beach to walk down to, and some boutiques in town to shop for jewelry and clothes.

Storytime: while browsing the hostel selection online around town, I stumbled upon a hostel room for $15 USD featuring air conditioning, which is a great price so I had to check it out. Upon arriving I found a windowless, walled compound which required banging on the door to enter; the person who answered and welcomed me into the walled garden was totally nude, as were the guests. The host insisted that if I stayed there, I “had to be nude.” Looking back, the name "Casa Nudista" should've been total a giveaway, but because of every other hotel pertaining to nakedness was else actually sporting clothed staff, I didn’t think twice about it! (This is not where I ended up staying.)

Transit

Once you’ve arrived in Zipolite, there is little reason to get a taxi anywhere in town, everywhere is walkable. Transit to and from Zipolite is different.

Regardless of where you are coming from, there is always an option to charter a taxi. This will cost you anywhere from $800-1000 pesos for Huatulco or Puerto Escondido. From Mazunte a taxi is $100 pesos. Pochutla is $200 pesos.

This driver collective was super friendly. He wanted to introduce his daughter to me.

Puerto Escondido to Ziploite

If you’re coming from Puerto Escondido, the best way is to get a Delphines bus, which boards on the corner across from Chedraui, to San Antonino ($50 pesos), and take the collectivo $15 pesos. This is the same collectivo that takes you to Mazunte—you just need to stay on it longer.

Mazunte to Ziploite

I arrived in Zipolite by taking the $15 peso ride in the back of a collective truck from Mazunte, the same one which picks you up in San Antonino. The taxi is around $100 pesos.

Zipolite to Oaxaca City

Leaving Zipolite, there is a collective to Oaxaca city on Lineas Unidas which leaves a limited amount of times a day (the earliest being 11 am), at a cost of $300 pesos. Alternatively, you can take a taxi to Pochutla ($200 pesos) and catch the collective from there to Oaxaca City, which leaves every 30 minutes.

I'm far more enthused than the voice seems... promise.

Food

Zipolite has a variety of food, including vegan food. There is street food, pizza, and Italian cuisine. There is a juice bar, and also fresh fruit stands. During my one night in Zipolite, I got a lentil burger at the Italian restaurant DonDe Franco. But there was a multitude of places to eat, including hotel restaurants.

Prices of food greatly vary, from street food beginning around $45 a sandwich to high-end seafood.

I have a habit of dining with random, friendly old-timers... This man was a school principal of 55 years.

Lodging

Lodging has a huge variety of price points and quality in Ziploite, relative to the size.

You should book ahead for luxury rooms, some of which are well over $2,000 pesos, or a cheap, dirty hostel for $150. It really depends on what you want.

There was a decent room at Hotel Naked Zipolite, with a king bed overlooking the pool courtyard starting at around $1200 pesos. Single rooms with fans in a more modest area began at $400 pesos.

I stayed at Shambhala Hostel ($200 pesos) which was cheap but higher quality, albeit less social, than El Carizzo Hostel ($150 pesos).
